FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are bollards used for?

Bollards are primarily used to protect infrastructure and/or pedestrians from damage caused by a vehicle. Additionally, they can be installed to manage access to pedestrian only areas.

What are bollards made of?

Traditionally, bollards were made from cast iron and concrete. Today’s modern bollards are most commonly made from metal or polyurethane. The highest quality bollards that have been impact tested are made from steel and are designed to stop a vehicle with zero penetration.

How tall are bollards?

Bollards come in a wide range of heights above ground: from 700mm to 1400mm.

How much space should there be between bollards?

The CPNI recommends, ‘to meet security requirements, bollards must be positioned to maximise blast stand-off distance, and spaced with a maximum air gap (between bollards) of 1,200mm.’
